The Director of the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU, Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias, received last 15 November the 2014 Science Popularization Prisma Award, in the Special Category, from the hands of the Mayor of A Coruña, Carlos Negreira, during a ceremony held in the Plenary Hall of the Town Hall of this city.

The prize-giving ceremony for the 18th Annual Prismas Awards has brought together a large representation of prominent figures including, among others, the rector of the UPV/EHU, Iñaki Goirizelaia, the Deputy for Culture of the Regional Council of Bizkaia, Josune Ariztondo, the President of the Regional Council of A Coruña, Diego Calvo, and the rector of the University of A Coruña, Xose Luis Armesto.

The Prisma Awards have been organised by the Scientific Museums of A Coruña for 26 years and represent the highest awards for science popularization in Spain. The Special Prize is one of the categories of these awards granted to organisations for their outstanding work in the field of science popularization.

According to the Director of the Chair, Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias, “The awarding of this prize, personal satisfaction aside, is important due to the support implied for the decision taken by two sponsoring institutions: the University of the Basque Country and the Regional Council of Bizkaia”.

In the opinion of Pérez Iglesias, “Acknowledgements like this are important for maintaining the institutional commitment and they also serve as a reference to other institutions when they become engaged in science promotion projects”.
